Who is your detective? Identify them (give the name).
What is the method your detective uses to detect/solve the crime?

Paragraph 2

Describe your detective. What is his/her physical description. Get it from the book. Use a quote. Use details. What are his/her physical attributes (height, weight, age, hair, eyes). What does your character do when he/she is not detecting? Where does your character live? What does he/she do for fun? What type car does he/she drive? What does your character typically SAY?

Paragraph 3

How does your character compare to another detective? Is there a TV character or another movie character your character is like? If your character is already on TV, compare your book character to his/her movie/book counterpart. How is the book character different from the movie or TV version of the character.

You should use AT LEAST 4 good items FROM YOUR BOOK. List the page numbers!

Death of the Author... Review

Death of the Author is where you read something cold and you determine meaning before you let what you know about the author color the meaning of the poem. Once you apply what you know about the author, then there are 2 (or more) ways to read the poem.
Death of the Author is about a time when you have done something or said something that you mean in one way but is interpreted another. It is contextually interpreted instead of literally interpreted.

Today we went to the library and chose an autobiography, biography, or memoir. You may get this book from any library or bookstore. The person you choose must be someone positive. The question you answer when you do the book report will be "How has this person influenced the world? How have they 'changed the world' in a positive way? How does this compare to Animal Farm (which we are reading as a class)?"
You may not choose someone who is infamous or best remembered for drugs, alcohol, illegal actions/crimes, etc. No members of the "27 Club" will be allowed.

Today we studied "To the Virgins" by Robert Herrick and used TP-CASTT as a poetry examination method. We then watched a 5 minute clip from Dead Poet's Society and compared it to "Carpe Diem" from Disney's Phineas and Ferb as our introduction to the Pop Culture unit.

We then talked about how Dylan Thomas was affected by his father's aging. His poem "Do Not Go Gentle" is both about dying and "carpe diem."

Allegory is a form of extended metaphor, in which objects, persons, and actions in a narrative, are equated with the meanings that lie outside the narrative itself. Online directions for parents to give approval for computer and internet use at school

After October 19, any student who does not have on-line permission from a parent/guardian will not be allowed to use computers or the internet at school. The paper permission form is no longer valid. The following instructions will walk parents through the process.

Log-on to Skyward using the parent log-in and password (not the student) then go to the“Register for 2011-2012” link on the left side.

Click on the tab in the center of the screen that says, “Start registration for (student name).” Four steps will appear. These must be completed in sequence.
Click on the checkbox at the end of each step and a green check mark will appear indicating that the step has been completed.

Step 1 – Student information (review and change if needed), click the check box
Step 2 – Ethnicity/Race (review and change if needed), click the check box·
Step 3 – Student acceptable use form (2 parts)

Click box 1 – “I have reviewed the acceptable use policy”

The person or thing that works against the protagonist.
Protagonist
The central or primary character in a story. The main character or narrator.

Nemesis can be a thing. It can be something you can NOT defeat. Archenemies are also nemeses. Black/white. Very good vs. evil. These are not defeat-able.

Characterization

Today in class, we discussed round and flat characters. You should have taken notes directly from the board.

Round characters are more complex than flat characters. They are also known as "dynamic" characters. Whilst not necessarily FAT, they are full, and they have both good and bad characteristics. They have personality, and they are well drawn. They change and they are affected by their situations and their surroundings. They become new people based on what happens to them in the book, and we (the reader) are better from having interacted with them. "A round character is capable of contradiction and change with evidence of emotional and psychological development."
Flat Characters are static. They don't change or deviate much. This is OK sometimes when we need a loyal side-kick or a villain who is a bad, bad man (a stock, stereotypical character). However, sketched in characters who are only simply half drawn are not desirable main characters. The example we used in class was Hermione and Scar.

When Learning is HARD

People generally resist trying to learn new things. Why is that? Why do we struggle with what is hard? What is your learning process when you are learning something new or hard? What is the hardest thing you have ever had to learn or study? When was it? Did you embrace it, or did you struggle against it?

When I was 7 years old my mother decided I was going to be a concert pianist. She decided it was time for me to take piano lessons. At first, it was grand fun. She signed me up for piano lessons... and I took piano lessons for 12 years. Not all of those years were fun. In fact, only about the first year was fun.

I took piano from "Sister Hoen" up the street for the first 5 years, and when I was 14, I graduated to Barbara Ellison, of the amazingly resilient Fortrel suits, for the rest of my career. When I was 16, I traded the piano concerto training in on piano teaching training (as long as I promised I wouldn't date "that boy, which wasn't much of a trade, as "that boy" had off-loaded me *sob*).

The hardest thing I ever had to learn was that my mother had truly wasted her dream. I was never going to BE a concert pianist. I wasn't much of a pianist. I was musical, and I had talent, but I didn't share in her dream. That's the real problem. I hadn't embraced the dream with her. Sadly.

Book Jacket Discovery
