Then we had an inner voice. :)
Next time we will read "Once More to the Lake" by E.B. White. You can download it here.
We will be discussing the story using this study guide.

What do I have to do for Inner Voice?

Links here
You can PRINT an inner voice sheet here. However, MAKE SURE you put the NAME of your book, the DATE you are making up, and the AUTHOR of your book on it. Also, MAKE SURE you also have YOUR NAME on it. You'd be shocked at how many of these I got without a name on them.
If you don't have WORD, you can print a pdf here

My All-time Favorite Book (results)

So, what did you say?

  • Many of you *love* action-adventure more than you thought you would. Mystery turned out to be much more of a hit than you thought it would. Surprise!
  • You love books like The Hunger Games and authors like Dan Brown, Suzanne Collins, Janet Evanovich, Mary Higgins Clark, and Clive Cussler.
What do you wish?
  • That you could read faster. This was a universal wish. :) Almost all of you thought you read too slow.
  • Guess what? Reading takes time and effort. Even I think it takes time, sometimes. I like short stories, and I try to read one every night. Sometimes I even read flash fiction, and you know how fast *I* read.
  • Guess what else? The only way to improve reading speed is to read. Sometimes I think I read slow... and I know I don't. Speed is a perception issue. Fast and slow (rate) is relative. Some times people read slower based on what they are reading. No one reads everything at the same rate.

Midterm Book Report Update

Where am I in my book, Mrs. Phippen?

  • Write about what book you have chosen to read. Underline or put in italics the name of the book. (If you are handwriting, always underline). You should include the author's name. Why did you choose this book? What drew you to this book? What was your reason for choosing this book over another book? What do you like about this book?
  • Who are your 2 main characters? What are their main quirks? What makes them interesting or important? Give me insight into your characters. Help me to see them. (Bonus points if you use quotes.)
  • Look at the title of your book. What clues is the author giving you about your book based on the front cover and title of the book. What does the title mean?

Honors English: After the Test?

"We live close together and we live far apart. We all go through the same things--it's all just a different kind of the same thing."
Compare and contrast your ideas about Trifles by Susan Glaspell and "A Jury of Her Peers" by Susan Glaspell. Try to find someone in the room who *only* read the play, who didn't read the short story. See how that changes your perspective.
How did reading both the short story and the play increase your understanding of the characters?
What happened?

  • Who killed John Wright?
  • What was the motive?
  • Why was John Wright killed?
  • How were Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale complicit in Mr. Wright's killing?
  • Find the quote that shows motive? Why do the women hide it?
  • Agree or disagree?
  • Why does Susan Glaspell write this piece? What is she trying to show? Who is the antagonist for Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters?
  • Who-else is there that is MISSING from this play that is important?
  • What-else is important that is SYMBOLIC? (What are your symbols?)
  • When-else (time frame is important)--look at your interrupters, your half-finished projects.
  • Where-else?
  • Why-else? (what other whys did I miss?
  • How-else? (could the murder have been committed?)
Think... think... think...
Put your notes down. Discuss with at least 2 people. Not more than 3. :) Discuss QUIETLY.
Turn in ONE set of notes for your group.
