Day 1, Honors English 10

I'm so excited to welcome you to my honors English 10 class this year!! We'll have a fantastic time together discussing BIG philosophical ideas.

Today we had a quick write where we wrote about your "favorite" book and your best assignment. You also wrote about where you might use a little English improvement.  Then we discussed existential ideas and how to ask the "right" questions. We talked about philosophers and how they impacted writing and question everything. Descartes was famous for saying, "I think, therefore I am" and other philosophers through the ages explored the question of "who am I?," "where am I going?," and other vitally important questions. The BIG questions of life. The existence questions.

Your homework then is to write about yourself. Write about who you are, in terms of what moves you. I played some "theme" songs and we discussed the kind of people were in the songs. I played:

  • "Summer Girl" by Jessica Andrews
  • "Billionaire" by Bruno Marks
  • "Imagine" by John Lennon
  • "The Story of my Life" by Neil Diamond
  • "Who I Am" by Jessica Andrews
  • "Man in the Mirror" by Michael Jackson
  • "Who We Are" by Lifehouse

First Day of Class!

Welcome to English 10! I can't tell you how excited I am to be teaching this year. Today we started with a "quick write" about your previous English experiences. See the prompt here. Then we discussed where we are going this year in English and why that matters.

After that, we had a lesson on inference using Brad Paisley's "Welcome to the Future." We watched the video and looked specifically for symbols and items that were telling us things we could "read."

Next time we will use this in the lesson.

Can't wait to see you in class!

Thursday, English 10: Mapping the Neighborhood

First, you evaluated your Body Shopping assignments.
You should have looked at the other students assignments and made comments on:
1. What you liked best (quotes, descriptions, pictures, what they said, etc.) looking at either their collage or what they wrote.
2. What you would add to their piece.
3. What you wish you knew (that you--or they) do not know.

Second, you got directions and paper on how to "Map Your Neighborhood"
Each student should have received a piece of 11x17 piece of paper. We discussed what should go on a map and reviewed the concepts of scale, legend, key, North, South, East, West, and that you should use symbols and envision how you see the setting of your book. If the book has a map, you should NOT refer to it, and instead look at how well the author created the setting in their mind and create the map you have in your head.

You can download items online, but you should be creative! DUE NEXT TIME!!!

Honors English 10--Wednesday

Today, you had the green Lesson 3, handout 4 & 5 (The Center for Learning) due. It was called "Getting to Know Pap" and "Matching Wits with Pap." We compared it with "My Papa's Waltz" by Theodore Rothke (good analysis here) and "Those Winter Sundays" by Robert Hayden (good analysis here).

We also listened to "Water and Bridges" by Kenny Rogers and compared it to both poems. Last time, we had a quiz, and you turned in the Strategic Reading study guide on Section 1 (Chapters 1-11).

Your homework is to READ chapters 12-18. You have a pink handout that runs chronologically. It will be due at the end of the book, but you can start to fill it out NOW. :o)
